Karen A Shea, Owner/Admissions

Where are you from?
Peru…Illinois not the country. It’s a very small town outside of Chicago. Definitely a Midwest girl.

What would you consider your biggest strength?
Resilience/Persistence. I don’t give up easily

What’s an interesting fact about you?
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel throughout Asia – Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan for a previous job. Prior to that I had only been to Vancouver, Canada. That really gave me the travel bug. I experienced how connected we all are and the kindness of strangers.

What’s one of your favorite Summit Salon Academy retail products and why?
Redken Wind Blown … gives my fine hair some oomph without getting crunchy. Love the stuff.

Tell us why you chose to work in education?
To make a difference in the professional beauty industry and help our students have a better future doing what they love.
I have always enjoyed working with people and found my way into education about 20 years ago. It’ a perfect way to make connections with people and also continue learning and growing every day.

What brought you to Summit?
My husband Michael, called me one day when he was travelling for business representing the Summit Salon Business Center and said….”Randy, (his boss) thinks we should open a school!” Each day is filled with new challenges, accomplishments and never a dull moment!

Who or what inspires you?
Being around passionate people – being challenged to grow and learn new things. And I love all things related to fashion!

Someday, you’d really like to…
Travel the world. I love exploring new places, meeting people and learning about their culture and of course shopping!

Deana Faust, Director of Education

Where are you from?
Twin Falls, Idaho.

What would you consider your biggest strength?
My ability to be objective and fair.

What’s an interesting fact about you?
I have held a Cosmetology license in four different states: Idaho, Nebraska, Texas, and Washington. I also really love history, especially Early American!

Describe yourself with one word.
Resilient and strong.

What’s one of your favorite Summit Salon Academy retail products and why?
My favorite treatment is Redken Extreme CAT Repair because we all need to repair our hair from the inside out. My favorite styling product is Redken Guts 10 Volume Boosting Foam. GOTTA HAVE IT!

Tell us why you chose to work in education?
I never saw myself in education early on in my career, but as I looked back on my start as a Cosmetologist, what I learned was not as near as important as who I learned it from. There are so many amazing people who have shared their knowledge with me, and helped me become who I am now, professionally and personally. I love having the opportunity to be the mentor now, in any capacity.

What brought you to Summit?
The commitment to creating professionals and helping people grow. We are about so much more than skill here at Summit, and I wanted to be apart of a family of others that share my passion for this industry!

Who or what inspires you?
People with the drive to overcome adversity and constantly do what it takes to make themselves the best they can be!

Be able to say that I saw everything and tried everything and that my life was full!



Melanee Garrison, Financial Aid Officer

Kent, WA.

What would you consider your biggest strength?
I always see the glass as half full.

I spun fire on my 30th birthday under a full moon on Maui.

Michael Jackson, he is an inspiration and a genius. I have always been a fan and incredibly curious to know what he’s like in real life

I have always worked in an education environment. I love working with students. Witnessing them fulfill their goals is very rewarding in so many ways.

What brought you to Summit?
I really wanted to work for Karen and Michael Shea!

Many things inspire me but on a daily basis I would have to say my family and friends.

Megan Brown, Cosmetology Educator

Where are you from?
Born and raised in Washington State!
What would you consider your biggest strength?
The ability to stay calm and patient in tough situations.
What’s an interesting fact about you?
When I was 12 years old, I jumped off a 30 ft bridge into the river below. Just for funsies.
Describe yourself with one word.
Caring.
What’s one of your favorite Summit Salon Academy retail products and why?
Redken Guts!!! For one, the name is AWESOME, and two who doesn’t love volume?!
If you could meet anyone, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It would be amazing to just have a conversation with him about life.
Tell us why you chose to work in education?
I’ve always known I wanted to help people achieve their goals in life. My sister inspired me to go through the Cosmetology Program and then I learned about Instructor Training, and everything fell into place.
What brought you to Summit?
One of the educators is a good friend of mine and she always spoke highly of Summit. I knew I had to get in on that! Best choice ever.
Who or what inspires you?
My students inspire me everyday. To see their passion shine through when when make a win or discovery is my favorite thing.

I attended the Esthetics program to refresh and gain new skills after a long time in the Cosmetology Industry, and I loved Summit so much that after I finished my program, I came back to teach both Cosmetology and Esthetics!

Bonney Lake, WA
What would you consider your biggest strength?
My biggest strength as an educator is my ability to connect and relate to all my students as individuals. I feel that understanding and encouragement drives the learning environment up the path of success.
What’s an interesting fact about you?
I was prom queen, and so was my mom!

If you could meet anyone, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
Salvador Dali. He said “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.” I would love to have a conversation with him so that I could understand the inner workings of his mind.

I always thought about a career in the educational field. When I discovered that I could teach Esthetics, I knew it would be the perfect fit! Teaching is a reward everyday. I have the joy of watching adults reach their “aha” moment, find passion, and build long lasting careers!

The opportunity to devote my time to education in a caring, upbeat, and industry driven environment.

Katlin Coyne, Social Media Manager

Where are you from?
I was born in Bremerton, WA but I have also lived in Hawaii, Tacoma and Chicago. I currently live in Seattle.
What would you consider your biggest strength?
I have a really strong work ethic, and can keep a cool head in an emergency.
What’s an interesting fact about you?
My love for soccer in general, and the Sounders in particular is borderline obsessive.

Quirky.
What’s one of your favorite Summit Salon Academy retail products and why?
Aghhh! I have to pick just one? Impossible! I LOVE Redken Color Extend Magnetics Shampoo and Conditioner because it smells amazing, and makes my hair super soft and shiny! I also really love Dermalogica After Sun Repair because I am REALLY fair, and burn if I so much as think about the sun!
If you could meet anyone, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
I would totally love to meet The Doctor because who wouldn’t love the opportunity to travel anywhere in space or time?! Yeah, I know, I know, I am a nerd!
Tell us why you chose to work in education?
Education is alchemy. A good education changes the student and the teacher for the better. I love watching the transformation the students make during their time with us.
What brought you to Summit?
I started working here while I was earning my bachelor’s degree at UW. I fell in love with this place, and I am still here nine years later! I really believe in what we do here, we prepare the students to not only work in the industry, but succeed in the industry!

The Puget Sound, it always heals my soul.
